Death Toll Rising: Defecation suffocation

26/07/10  ||  Smalley

When “Killing Babies” & “Death by Poop” are listed as lyric themes on a bands’ Metal Archives page , you’ll probably go into their album expecting something pretty shitty, right (no pun intended)? Fortunately for me, “Defecation suffocation” isn’t shitty, though it also isn’t very good either; most of the pieces for successful death metal are here, like adequate Cookie Monster growling (though “Jesse”‘s shrieking is pretty annoying; they need to just let the other vocalists take over vox duties full-time).

Anyway, there’s also a reasonably heavy (if slightly low-fi) rhythm guitar sound here, something no death metal band should be without, every member of the band is pretty skilled on their respective instruments, and the tempos are nice ‘n aggressive. So, what’s the problem then? You see, what keeps “suffocation” from reaching quality as an album is the band’s songwriting fails to make things come together here, to make the aforementioned death metal pieces fit together in a compelling way; the songs here are just kind of… there, never really giving us any catchy riffs or forming into any interesting ebb-and-flow, just sort of… there.

There’s potential here, but all in all, the shapeless songwriting makes this one pretty average death metal overall, and experiencing an actual suffocation by defecation probably would’ve been a more interesting experience.
